07SepBoys county championship
Laceby Manor Golf Club's Rob Mackay and his U18 Lincolnshire team made county history recently when they won the Boys County Championship at Luthenham Heath. It is the first time in 20 years since a Midland-based county team has held the trophy.
On day one Lincolnshire were triumphant over Devon 5 ½ - 3 ½ and on day two they halved against Yorkshire 4 ½ - 4 ½. The Lincolnshire team went into the final day of the three-day, 36-hole match play competition one point behind the Surrey team, who were seeking their fourth title in five years and were the favourites to win.
After Pat Kelly beat his international team-mate Greg Payne 3 and 2, and Jordan Wrisdale overcame Bradley Thomas 2 and 1, Lincolnshire only needed one more victory to clinch the title. Surrey gained a point in the third match so the pressure was on for the three remaining matches.
Rob was 1 up on the 18th tee and halved the hole to secure the win. Billy Spooner who had a hole in one the previous day, was also 1 up on the 18th tee and both players halved the hole with eagles. This left Ashton Turner to complete his match, again 1 up on the 18th tee and he halved the hole to give Lincolnshire an incredible 7-2 victory.
Congratulations to the Lincolnshire team from all at Laceby Manor Golf Club!
